IDAHO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Erik Hill, Erik J. Hill Photography, Idaho Wedding Photographer, Boise Wedding Photographer, Sun Valley Wedding Photographer, Southern Idaho Wedding Photographer

Hi. I’m Erik.

I used to be pretty addicted to thrift store shopping. Like really addicted. My main obsessions at thrift stores were 10 speed bicycles, wool sweaters, leather soled dress shoes, and vintage electronics. It got so bad that I even would buy shoes that were slightly too small for me if I thought they were cool enough, then I would even try to wear them. Even when they made my feet ache. One day I was browsing through the curio cabinet at the Silverdale, WA Goodwill when a beautiful Canon AE-1 Program caught my eye. Was it way too expensive? Did I have any experience with film photography? Or any kind of photography aside from point-and-shoot cameras at all? Of course I didn’t. But did I buy that 30 year old camera? Of course I did.

That started my love of photography. I bought a lot of film, took a lot of poorly exposed and poorly composed photographs until I upgraded to digital. I started taking pictures of things that interested me as my wife and I traveled our first year of marriage. I grew to love landscape and astrophotography. I eventually moved into the portrait arena after taking a couple introductory photography classes in college.

I did my first wedding in 2015, and fell in love with the emotion and art of wedding photography. Telling a story that will last is super meaningful to me. I could rant for a long time on how important having a professional wedding photographer is on your wedding day, but this isn’t the place. Since 2015 I’ve been able to work with many lovely couples in Idaho, Washington, Utah, Nevada, California and Wyoming.

Here is Erik in a nutshell: I love meeting people, that’s my favorite part of being a photographer. I get to meet all sorts of interesting people. I love cheesy/corny/terrible jokes. I love my family. I have been married to my wife Danielle for 10 years, and we have 4 kids together . We live in Southern Idaho and hope to spend the rest of our lives here.

How I Roll

I like to keep things simple. If you have an idea or two of something you would like to emulate, I am down to give it a try. I feel my best work comes from when we trust each other, and we let creativity drive the session. Don’t worry, we will definitely get the traditional shots that your Grandmother will hang on her wall, but then we will get the shots that best show your love story and personality. I like to have a mixture of posed (smiling/looking at each other or the camera) and lifestyle (unposed/candid). If you feel shy in front of a camera, don’t worry. Everyone feels shy in front of a camera. Some people are just better at faking it. I’ll do my best to help you fake it as best as you possibly can.

Because of my background in landscapes, I like to combine landscape techniques with my portraits. Is the term portrascape a thing? If not, then I’m coining it. Putting beautiful people in beautiful places is my jam. I like film, so I emulate it in my editing. I’ll often have a film camera hanging from my neck in tandem with my digital cameras. I prefer natural edits, so I don’t do a lot of extensive retouching. (I’m not a super huge fan of it philosophically. But that’s a topic for another day) I think everyone needs to learn to love themselves more (myself included) instead of trying to be something you aren’t. I will help capture you, as you are, with the one/s you love. That’s my goal.

“Erik was awesome! He was fun and up for anything! He showed up earlier than I even expected and stayed pretty late to unsure we got all our moments captured. He dealt with my rowdy, crazy, wild Bridal party. I would recommend him for any wedding!”

Twin Falls Engagement Session

“I am SO SO SO glad that Erik was the one to break the seal for us. He made us feel so incredibly comfortable, and told us what to do, but never made it seem posed!

My favorite pictures are always the candid ones, because I hate posed smiles, and he just perfectly captured those mid-laugh smiles and sweet moments…”

“Mr. Hill did a fantastic job with my daughter’s festivities. His handling of the event, multiple schedule dates to meet, conduct, quality of work, and results exemplify his professionalism. I noticed a creative knack that appeals to a broad variety of tastes and preferences.

I’d wager that Erik could easily handle just about any event that one might like preserved – be it parties, reunions, or whatever the occasion – with the same stress-reducing, polite, vibrant, and professional manners that he brings to the wedding scene.”

“Erik was really good about helping us get out of our picture smile faces. He made sure we seemed genuinely happy, but caught the good smiles, not the crazy ones. He took us to the most beautiful place and made us feel like the cutest couple he had ever photographed. HIGHLY recommend.”

Erik was soo much fun to shoot with! My fiancé and I had such a great time! He was super personable and even let us bring our fur babies! He was great with giving direction on how to pose and where to stand to get the best pictures, and they turned out amazing! The editing style that Erik uses is truly timeless and it really enhances the natural beauty of the scenery. I am obsessed with them! These are pictures that we can cherish for life! Definitely would recommend Erik to anyone looking for a photographer and will be personally using again!”
